Football Christianity
We are entering football season. Many of us will sport our favorite college or pro team colors. We may go out and purchase a jersey, a sweatshirt, a hat with our team proudly displayed. Some of us have bumper stickers or keyrings with our favorite team on them. Many of us will attend gatherings with friends to enjoy food and watch a game. As we go through football season, let us be careful to the time we put into these activities as opposed to the time we give to the Lord's work and the Lord's church. Sports and other activities are fun and they provide opportunities to be with the Lord's people, but let's make sure that we are also mindful of wearing the colors of Christ as well, especially when we watch Alabama beat Auburn this year- let's remember to be merciful to the fans on the other side!
Below is an article taken from the Western Hills church of Christ bulletin:
These points are amusing, but also thought provoking.
Quarterback Sneak: Church members who quietly exit following th Lord's Supper, a quarter of the way through the service, or near the last quarter of the service.
Draft Choice: Selection of a seat near the door.
Draw Play: What too many children and a few adults do with their attendance cards or bulletin.
Half time: The time between Sunday School and Worship Service.
Benchwarmer: Those whose only participation is their attendance on Sunday morning.
Fumble: Dropping a song book, singing the wrong verse, and general inattention to the service.
Backfield Motion: Making two or three trips out of the auditorium during the sermon (schools don't allow this.)
Stay in the Pocket: What happens to a lot of money that should go to the local work.
Two Minute Warning: When a preacher begins extending the invitation, giving everyone time to shuffle song books and gather belongings.
Sudden Death: The preacher going over time.
Blitz: The stampede for the door after services.
Halfback Option: When 50 % of the congregation does not return Sunday evening or Wednesday evening for services.
Let us be careful not to fall into football Christianity. Let's give God our all. In Mark 12:28-31, "One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'There is no commandment greater than these."
May God bless your week. Margie
