Bible Study
We all know the importance of studying the scriptures daily. We know that while our Lord was tempted in the wilderness by Satan that he used scriptures to defeat the devil. Jesus studied the scriptures. Christ taught the Pharisees and the Saducees and they could never trick Christ with the scriptures. He knew them well. We know that Paul was taught the scriptures and he used the scriptures to teach throughout his ministry. He used them to show Jews and Gentiles the way of Christ according to the fulfillment of many prophecies. It is important for us to teach the scriptures to our children as I am sure Mary taught them to Christ, but it is equally important for us to study them ourselves.
Many of us have heard the analogy about riding in an airplane. The flight attendant tells us in case of emergency that we are to put on our oxygen mask first and then take care of our children. Why? Because children may not be able to do this for themselves. We need to make sure that we are stable so that we are capable of taking care of our children. One of our responsibilities as wives and mothers is to take care of our spiritual well being so that we can take care of our families. This starts with daily Bible study- getting into the Word- becoming close to Christ and our Father. Only then will we be strong enough to fight the battle and help win the war against Satan.
The following questions were sent to me by my friend, Rachel. She obtained these from Sarah Barton, a sister in Christ who taught on Bible study at a Ladies Retreat. Sarah states,
"A disciple is one who, thirsting to be like Christ and intent on following Jesus, systematically and progressively rearranges her affairs to that end."
Ask yourself questions like these when you are reading Scripture.
- What does it mean for this text to flow through me?
- What is this passage saying that cannot be denied?
- How is God calling me to join in what’s happening in this text?
- If I open my imagination, how do I enter into this text in new ways?
- What am I going to do after my encounter with this text?
- What small morsel of this text can I keep with me throughout the day?
- How is God with me as I am reading this text?
- What part of this text is God calling me to memorize?
