Weekly Devotional
The poem below was reprinted from the Margaret Street Church of Christ bulletin, Milton, Florida,
December 7, 1994
‘Twas two hours before worship and all through the house
not a creature was stirring not even a spouse.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
no visions of heaven danced in their heads.
Ma, in her curlers, and I, what a sap!
Had just settled down, “Dick Tracy” in lap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the chair to see what was the matter.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
but my neighbor’s lawn mower, and in high gear;
I thought to myself and just had to say,
“Just a fool would save this for the Lord’s Day.”
I nodded my head and was turning around,
I looked in the mirror and saw with a frown;
A little round mouth drawn up in a bow,
stubbornness, conceit, that I should know.
I haven’t been to worship since…what was the day?
The morn before mama went on her good way.
I’m part of the church, have a spouse that would go,
and we could have souls as white as the snow.
I woke up my mate and said, “How about you?”
She smiled and said sweetly, “Bible Study too?”
We spoke not a word but went right to work
dressed up all the kids and they were so pert.
They heard us exclaim as we drove out of sight,
TWO SERVICES THIS MORNING AND ANOTHER TONIGHT!
Many people make New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions are goals that we set for ourselves or our families. Setting goals and taking steps to achieve those goals will help us become better people, better friends, better wives, better mothers, better daughters and/or better sisters in Christ; in short, better Christians. I hope this year as we set our goals that our main goal is to focus on our relationship with Christ. I hope we all strive to build our personal relationship with God by talking to Him, by reading His Word and by worshiping Him at every opportunity.
On this website, under “Links” there is a Daily Bible Reading Plan that may help you in your journey through His Word this year. I pray that as this New Year approaches, “…let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
(Hebrews 12:1, 2)
May God bless you and your family as you walk in Christ this year.
